I’ve met many wonderful people since moving to Austin including the lovely Catelyn Silapachai. She and her brother, Clif Claycomb, own The Distillery, a lifestyle brand and collection of vintage, handmade, and specialty goods. Catelyn and I sat down over coffee one afternoon at Radio to talk about her business and The Distillery’s upcoming Fine Goods Pop-Up Shop at Black Lagoon: Art + Yoga on Thursday, September 10th from 6:30 to 9:30.
Catelyn started The Distillery with her brother in 2013 after working in the finance sector after college. After four years, she found herself burnt out in the corporate world and wanted the flexibility of working for herself. Though Catelyn says she never expected to be doing something like this, hunting for antiques and hidden treasures runs in the family as Catelyn’s mother sells antiques at local markets in the Dallas area.
The Distillery carries an amazing variety of vintage and new goods in every price point from vintage kimonos to one of a kind jewelry pieces. The store also commissions pieces that are unique to their shop including the Cacti Dog Collar. (Side note, Catelyn is also the foster coordinator for Greyhound Pets of America Central Texas in case there are readers out there who want to get into fostering!)
During our talk, I asked Catelyn about being a young small business owner and what advice she has for those looking to get started with their own businesses. “There are so many ways to have your business. There’s no wrong answer,” she told me. Opening a business like The Distillery opens up the door to so many things including self employment, the opportunity to curate stock and creating a flexible lifestyle.
Catelyn recommends the following resources for those looking to learn more starting a business:
- Tim Ferriss’s Podcast
- After the Jump Podcast with Grace Bonney
- The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
- 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
