My dear friend, Melissa, gave me a gorgeous banana yellow J.Crew sweater for Christmas this year. I have to admit, I was more than a bit hesitant to put it on, not only because it was a size small but also because it was yellow. Turns out it’s a generous small, so luckily it fit. And the yellow was surprisingly delightful. It wasn’t a color I would ever pick out for myself since my high school colors were green and “gold,” which was really just yellow. I associate both colors with my tumultuous teenage years, so I rarely try on anything green or yellow.
My co-workers were equally taken with the color, pointing out obviously that it was a “very yellow sweater.” Having just watched Marie Antoinette this past weekend, this obvious comment reminded me of when Marie Antoinette finally acknowledges the King’s mistress, Madame du Barry by saying, “There are a lot of people at Versailles today.” Yes, it is a very yellow sweater.
I was inspired to put this rather preppy outfit together after starting the book I Love Your Style by Amanda Brooks. I have to admit that I got this book back in 2011 as a gift from my sister, Maria. Up until now, it’s been a coffee table book, but I decided to crack it open and learn a thing or two about dressing more thoughtfully.
I’ve always considered myself a stylish person, but over the past year, I’ve lost my own sense of style. Thrifting at an obsessive level for my online store (currently on hiatus) led to an identity crisis of sorts. Sure, I had things I liked to sell, but I was slowly losing sight of what I liked to wear.
Adding to the confusion was the overall Austin style, which is more casual than anywhere I’ve ever lived. A lot of people who visit from out of town do up the hipster bohemian chic look. But on a daily basis, most people who live here dress for comfort rather than totally for fashion. I would also add that makeup, which was previously a huge part of my life, is not heavily worn in Austin, with most people opting for a natural look. I’m not sure if casual or natural is me, but it’s what I’ve gravitated towards now that I live in a more laid back city.
I hope I Love Your Style helps give me clarity about where I’m at in my own style journey. In any case, the above photo is what I wore today with two little white lies. I forgot to put on the bracelet before I left the house. And I actually wore a backpack and not a purse.
