My typical summer uniform evolved out of necessity. When I lived in South Carolina, summer temperatures ranged from 90° to 100°, which meant I lived in dresses and skirts. But on days when it was just too hot to care, I threw on jean shorts and a breezy shirt with sneakers.
I didn’t realize my summer fashion was distinct from other seasons until my sophomore year of college when I was getting ready to go out when my friend said, “Wow, you’re really a fan of wearing long sleeved shirts with shorts.” That summer I was obsessed with pairing things that didn’t seem to go together.
I spent my next summer in New York City where I lived in sundresses, sandals and what can only be described as hipster clothing. This was definitely the year I idolized the style of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, much to my my mother’s dismay.
I’m unsure what my ideal summer style would be because my style depends very much on what’s functional, fashionable and flattering for any given season. And part of that depends on location, age and what I want to wear on any given day. In a perfect world, I might gravitate towards clothing that’s more mature and fashionable, but for now I’m kind of content with a throwback to my adolescence.
What do you wear during summer? Is your style a lot different from every other season? I’m curious to know if others struggle with switching gears every season and from year to year.
