I recently I decided to stop wearing an underwire bra, which was part of my daily life since I was 13. What initially swayed me to stop wearing a bra was the Texas weather. From June until September, it was anywhere from 90 to 105 degrees. The thought of putting a piece of clothing right against my skin was just painful. Add in metal wires that poke you, and it’s basically a recipe for disaster even if you’re wearing the right bra size.
So I stopped.
At first it was weird. Really, really weird. Everywhere I went, I was convinced people knew I wasn’t wearing a bra. After awhile, I stopped caring and stopped thinking about the opinions of strangers.
There are a lot of people out there who claim that people with an A to B cup can go bra-less. The rest of us are, well, stuck. I’m here to tell you that it’s perfectly fine to not wear a bra no matter what size you are. Who cares? I mean, really. At the end of the day, who cares?
I personally believe going bra-less is better for your health. There’s plenty of information out there about the perils of bras. They could cause breast sagging and skin irritation. They can also restrict circulation. As with any issue, there is a ton of information out there. I encourage you to do your own research and decide what’s best for you.
Do I still wear a bra from time to time? Sure! But these days I tend to opt for soft cup bras that were like the training bras I had as a teenager. I picked up this Cosabella bralet from Forty Winks last year and it’s pretty great. In case you’re wondering, soft cup and wireless bras have come a loooonnng way in the past few years. I think they’re a great option for people looking to move away from the poking and prodding of underwire bras. And, of course, I always wear a bra when exercising. This Target one is my current fave.
No matter what you decide, don’t be afraid to try. If you want to wear an underwire every day for the rest of your life, cool. If not, also cool. Don’t be afraid to try new things like going bra-less. There’s lots of marketing dollars out there trying to sway you about what you need or don’t need, but at the very least, if you are considering it, at least try it once or twice.
