Dawn (or similar) Dish Washing Detergent.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) of brand of choice (price dependent on brand and quality). The EVOO will help add moisture and softness back to your brushes.
One plate with high rim. Plate size should be determined by how many brushes you’re cleaning. If you want to clean 5 to 10 brushes, I recommend a large dinner plate. If you are cleaning 1 to 4 brushes, use a smaller sandwich sized plate.
For the next step, pour the dish washing detergent onto the plate. Cover a little less than half the plate in dish washing detergent.
Then, add the EVOO If you are using a dinner plate, add about 1 table spoon. If you are using a sandwich plate, use about 1/2 a tablespoon.
Take your brushes and swirl them around in the solution you just made. Depending on how dirty your brushes are, the left over makeup should appear in the solution pretty quickly.
After swirling your brush in the solution, take the brush and drag it against the rim of the plate. This will help get the color out even future in a way that doesn’t get your hands too dirty.
After cleaning your brushes, bring them to the bathroom or kitchen sink and run them under cold water. Use your hand to rub the soap out of the brushes. Keep them under the facet until the water runs clean.
Now, for the last part. Take your brushes altogether in your hand and hold them. Make sure the heads of the brushes are directly against each other (see the photo below for visual explanation).
After that, take a hair tie or rubber band and tie the brushes together like you would do a pony tail.
Finally, hang the brushes from your sink. Let the brushes dry for at least ten minutes. Some brushes will take longer to dry–I’ve noticed this especially with my e.l.f. brushes.
The reason why you want to dry your brushes upside down is so the water doesn’t get caught in the brush and loosen the glue that holds the bristles together. Same goes for drying on the side.
You will NOT be disappointed with this cleaning solution. My brushes haven’t felt this soft in ages. Give it a try!
